You Googled It: Answering Your Biggest Ultherapy PRIME Questions

6 min read

If you’ve been Googling Ultherapy PRIME, chances are you’ve come across some version of the same questions...

Does Ultherapy PRIME hurt?... Can it melt facial fat?... When will I actually see results?... Is it worth the money?... And what’s really different about Ultherapy PRIME compared with the original Ultherapy treatment?

These are also some of the most common questions I hear from patients considering Ultherapy PRIME at my med spa (Skin Treats Aesthetics in Louisville, KY). And I totally understand why.

If you’re investing in a treatment for skin laxity, you want to know what it actually feels like, what kind of result you can realistically expect, and whether it’s the right treatment for your face- not just what the device manufacturer says it can do.

So, let’s answer the questions you’re already Googling...

Does Ultherapy PRIME Hurt?

I’m not going to tell you that you don’t feel Ultherapy PRIME, because you do.

Most of my patients describe it as little pulses of heat, tingling, or a quick zinging sensation as the ultrasound energy is delivered. Certain areas can be more sensitive than others, especially around the jawline or where we’re closer to bone.

That said, comfort is really important to me.

At Skin Treats, we use topical numbing along with JOURNAVX, a non-opioid prescription pain medication, as part of our comfort protocol when it’s appropriate for the patient.

One of the things I love about PRIME is that the treatment is faster and the visualization is significantly improved. That allows me to treat very intentionally because I can see exactly where I’m delivering the energy while also keeping your comfort in mind.

And if you’ve heard some of the old stories about Ultherapy being painful, don’t let those scare you away from PRIME.

PRIME is a different treatment experience, and we have a comfort protocol specifically designed to make the treatment as manageable as possible. Most of my patients are actually pleasantly surprised by how well they tolerate it.

Can Ultherapy PRIME Melt Facial Fat?

I hear this one all the time, and I always joke with my patients... If Ultherapy could actually melt fat, I’d have a million-dollar machine and we’d be melting fat everywhere!

Ultherapy PRIME is not designed to be a fat-melting treatment!

We’re using microfocused ultrasound energy to create very precise points of thermal coagulation at specific depths beneath the skin. The goal is to stimulate your body’s natural healing response and collagen production—not eliminate facial fat.

This is also one of the reasons I love the real-time ultrasound visualization with PRIME. I can actually see the tissue layers I’m treating and customize treatment based on your individual anatomy rather than blindly delivering energy or treating every face exactly the same way.

And preserving beautiful facial volume is incredibly important to me.

We need facial fat and volume to keep the face looking youthful. The last thing I want to do is intentionally take that away. My goal with PRIME is to improve laxity and support the tissue while respecting the natural anatomy of your face.

When Will I See Results From Ultherapy PRIME, and How Long Do They Last?

Ultherapy is definitely not an instant-gratification treatment, and I actually think that’s part of what makes the result so beautiful.

Some patients notice an early tightening, but the real change happens gradually as your body builds and remodels collagen. I usually tell my patients they may begin noticing changes around 6 to 8 weeks, with more visible improvement around three months.

That said, collagen remodeling continues beyond that, so I prefer to evaluate the final result several months after treatment rather than judging it too early.

Results can last a year or longer, depending on your age, skin quality, degree of laxity, lifestyle, and individual aging process.

Of course, Ultherapy doesn’t stop us from aging (if only). I look at PRIME as part of a long-term skin and facial-aging plan rather than a one-and-done treatment that’s somehow going to freeze your face in time forever.

The goal is to support how you age-not pretend aging isn’t happening.

What’s the Difference Between Ultherapy PRIME and Original Ultherapy?

For me as a provider, one of the biggest differences is the technology and visualization.

PRIME gives me a much clearer, more detailed view of the tissue I’m treating, and the platform itself is faster and more efficient.

That visualization is a huge deal to me. I can see the different tissue layers and place the ultrasound energy where I want it based on the individual anatomy sitting in front of me.

Because I don’t want to treat every face using the exact same recipe!

PRIME allows me to be much more intentional and customized with treatment, while patients also benefit from a faster treatment experience compared with the original system.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Ultherapy PRIME?

My favorite Ultherapy PRIME patient isn’t necessarily a certain age. It’s someone who is starting to see mild to moderate laxity.

Maybe the jawline isn’t as crisp as it used to be, they’re noticing early jowling, their neck feels a little looser, or their brows aren’t sitting quite where they used to.

I especially love it for patients who tell me, “I don’t want to look different. I just want to look a little tighter and more refreshed.”

It’s also important to understand what Ultherapy can’t do- significant skin laxity isn’t going to behave like mild laxity, and Ultherapy isn’t a replacement for a facelift.

There are patients where surgery, or a different combination of treatments, is going to produce a better result. I’m very upfront about that during the consultation.

What Areas Can Ultherapy PRIME Treat?

The lower face and jawline are probably some of my favorite areas because that’s where patients start noticing those subtle changes, like less definition, early jowling, and a little heaviness along the lower face.

I also really love treating the neck, and treatment of the brow and upper face can be beautiful in the right patient. It’s not going to give you a surgical brow lift, but that subtle lift can make the eye area look more open and refreshed.

What I really like is being able to look at the entire face rather than chasing one isolated area. Sometimes the best treatment plan is the lower face and neck. Sometimes it’s the full face and neck. That’s why I prefer to evaluate each patient first and customize the treatment based on what I actually see.

How Much Does Ultherapy PRIME Cost, and Is It Worth the Money?

The cost of Ultherapy PRIME depends primarily on how much of the face and neck we’re treating and how comprehensive the treatment needs to be. Treating the brow is obviously very different from treating the lower face and neck or doing a full face and neck treatment.

As for whether Ultherapy PRIME is worth the money, it depends on what you’re trying to accomplish.

If you want a nonsurgical treatment that works deeper than skincare, peels, or microneedling—and your primary concern is laxity and loss of firmness- I think Ultherapy PRIME can be an incredible investment.

But I don’t sell Ultherapy to everyone who walks through the door. If I don’t think your anatomy or degree of laxity is going to give you a result that justifies the investment, I would rather tell you that and recommend something else.

To me, that’s really what determines whether Ultherapy PRIME is “worth it.” It’s not simply whether the technology is good. It’s whether it’s the right technology for you.

What Are the Side Effects and Downtime After Ultherapy PRIME?

One of the reasons patients like Ultherapy PRIME is that there really isn’t traditional downtime. Most patients leave looking completely normal and can go right back to their day.

You may have some temporary redness immediately afterward, and your skin can feel tender—almost like you’ve done a really hard facial workout. Some patients also notice mild swelling, tenderness, tingling, or sensitivity when touching certain areas for several days afterward.

I always tell patients that what’s happening underneath the skin is much more interesting than what they’re seeing on the outside. We’ve created a controlled response in the tissue, and now your body has to do the work of remodeling collagen. That’s why the result develops gradually and continues to improve over time.
