Pico Laser for Hyperpigmentation: Is It Worth It?

If you've been researching treatments for melasma, sun damage, or uneven skin tone, chances are you've come across Pico laser. One of the most common questions I hear from patients is, "Is it really worth the money?" In my opinion, the answer is a resounding yes.

Pico laser has become one of my favorite treatments because it doesn't just target pigmentation—it can also improve overall skin quality and texture. But as with most things in aesthetics, the best results come from having realistic expectations and treating the skin as a whole.

What Does Pico Laser Treat?

  • Pico laser is an excellent treatment for:

  • MelasmaSunspots and age spots

  • Hyperpigmentation

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Acne marks

  • Dull skin

  • Mild texture concerns

One of the reasons I love Pico is that it offers multiple benefits in a single treatment. Patients often come in wanting to improve discoloration, but they're pleasantly surprised by how much smoother and brighter their skin looks overall.

Does Pico Laser Work for Melasma and Hyperpigmentation?

Absolutely. Pico laser works exceptionally well for melasma and pigmentation, but I always remind patients that melasma is a lifelong condition, not just a spot. That's an important distinction.

Melasma isn't something you simply "laser away" forever. It's a pigment disorder, and controlling triggers is just as important as treating the pigment itself. Before reaching for the laser, I like to optimize the skin first.

That means making sure:

  • Daily SPF is non-negotiable.

  • Sun protection habits are excellent.

  • Excessive heat exposure, including hot yoga and saunas, is minimized.

  • Medical-grade skincare is in place.

  • Hormonal factors are considered.

I often recommend ingredients like vitamin C, hydroquinone (cycled appropriately), niacinamide, brightening pads, and retinols to help stabilize the skin. Once everything is optimized, Pico laser becomes an incredibly effective tool for reducing stubborn pigmentation.

Is Pico Laser Safe for All Skin Types?

Yes. One of the things I appreciate most about Pico technology is that it is safe for Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI.

That means I can confidently treat a wide variety of patients and customize treatments based on individual concerns and goals.

Who Is Not a Good Candidate for Pico Laser?

Not everyone is an ideal candidate.

If a patient isn't willing to commit to wearing sunscreen or following a recommended skincare routine, Pico laser probably isn't the right place to start. I want my patients to get the best possible results, and protecting your investment is a huge part of that.

Beautiful outcomes don't come from a laser alone. They come from a combination of treatment, skincare, and consistency.

How Many Pico Laser Treatments Are Needed?

This answer is different for every patient.

Some people achieve beautiful improvement after a single treatment, while others benefit from a series. I reassess the skin after each session and tailor recommendations accordingly.

Three treatments are often a sweet spot, but there is no one-size-fits-all approach.

What Is the Downtime After Pico Laser?

Downtime is minimal. Most patients experience redness for about 12 hours.

Over the next five to seven days, targeted areas of pigmentation or sun damage may temporarily darken and appear freckled before naturally flaking away.

For many patients, this brief healing period is well worth the improvement they see in their skin.

Pico Laser vs Microneedling...

Patients frequently ask whether they should choose Pico laser or microneedling.

The truth is, they do different jobs.

Pico laser primarily targets pigment and discoloration using non-thermal energy. Microneedling works by creating tiny micro-injuries that stimulate collagen and elastin production.

If your primary concern is pigmentation, melasma, or sunspots, I typically lean toward Pico laser. If collagen stimulation and texture improvement are the priority, microneedling is an excellent option. In many cases, combining the two treatments provides beautiful results.

Pico Laser vs Moxi...

Moxi has become increasingly popular, and patients often ask how it compares to Pico laser.

Moxi focuses heavily on rejuvenation and texture improvement. Pico laser can improve texture too, but it also addresses pigmentation.

Personally, if I had to choose between the two, I'd choose Pico every time because it offers both texture improvement and pigment reduction.

Is Pico Laser Worth the Money?

In my opinion, Pico laser is worth it—1000%.

I have patients who come in twice a year for maintenance and others who love doing treatments quarterly because they love the way their skin looks and feels.

When you consider the improvements in pigmentation, texture, and overall skin quality, it's one of the treatments I consistently feel good recommending.

If you're struggling with sun damage, melasma, or uneven skin tone, Pico laser may be one of the best investments you can make in your skin.
