Microneedling vs RF Microneedling: Which Treatment Is Better for Aging Skin?

When it comes to maintaining healthy, youthful-looking skin, one of the biggest goals is keeping your body producing collagen and elastin.

As we age, our natural production slows down, which can lead to thinner skin, fine lines, texture changes, enlarged pores, and laxity. That’s why treatments designed to stimulate your body’s own repair process can be so powerful.

Both traditional microneedling and RF microneedling are designed to support collagen production, but they work a little differently. So how do you know which one is right for your skin? Let’s break it down...

Jenny Giudice CRNA of Skin Treats Aesthetics in Louisville KY discussing microneedling and RF microneedling treatments

What Does Microneedling Actually Do?

Microneedling creates tiny, controlled micro-injuries in the skin, which triggers your body’s natural healing response. This process stimulates the production of collagen and elastin. And in the game of aging, collagen and elastin are the answer.

Think of collagen and elastin as the scaffolding that supports your skin. Over time, that scaffolding naturally becomes weaker. By continuing to stimulate collagen production, we can help support a thicker, stronger dermis and healthier-looking skin as we age.

Microneedling is commonly used to improve:

  • Fine lines

  • Skin texture

  • Acne scarring

  • Enlarged pores

  • Overall skin quality

Traditional Microneedling vs RF Microneedling: What’s the Difference?

Both treatments start with the same concept: creating controlled micro-injuries that stimulate your body’s repair process. The biggest difference is the addition of radiofrequency energy.

Traditional Microneedling:

Traditional microneedling uses tiny needles to create microchannels in the skin. These micro-injuries stimulate collagen and elastin production naturally.

It’s a great option for improving overall skin quality and encouraging healthier-looking skin.

RF Microneedling:

RF microneedling combines those same micro-injuries with radiofrequency heat energy delivered deeper into the skin. Whenever we can safely add heat to a treatment, we can often increase the effectiveness. The added radiofrequency energy helps create a stronger response, making RF microneedling especially helpful when we’re targeting skin laxity and tightening.

Does Microneedling Tighten Loose Skin?

This is one of the biggest questions patients have.

The honest answer? Traditional microneedling can help improve skin quality, but realistically, it will only do so much for skin laxity.

For patients wanting more tightening, RF microneedling is often the better choice because the added heat helps create more noticeable improvement.

When deciding between traditional microneedling and RF microneedling, we look at your:

  • Age

  • Skin quality

  • Goals

  • Budget

I typically recommend RF microneedling more often for patients over 40 because collagen production naturally declines with age, and the additional tightening benefits can be helpful.

Microneedling vs Laser Treatments: Which One Do You Need?

Microneedling and lasers are both amazing treatments, but they are designed to address different concerns.

Microneedling is usually my recommendation when the main goal is stimulating collagen and elastin production. Laser treatments are typically chosen for more specific skin concerns.

Microneedling vs Pico Laser

Pico laser is primarily used to target pigmentation concerns like sun damage, dark spots, and uneven pigment. Microneedling focuses more on collagen stimulation, texture, and strengthening the skin.

Microneedling vs Erbium Laser Resurfacing

Erbium YAG laser resurfacing works more on the surface of the skin to polish and resurface. Microneedling works deeper in the dermis to stimulate collagen remodeling.

The good news? You don’t always have to choose one or the other. For some patients, combining treatments like RF microneedling and Erbium laser resurfacing allows us to address multiple layers of the skin—supporting collagen production below the surface while improving texture and overall skin quality above the surface.

Can Microneedling Help Hyperpigmentation?

This is where expectations are important. Microneedling alone is typically not my first choice for treating pigmentation.

When combined with the right topical products, microneedling can support improvement, but pigmentation often requires more targeted treatments like medical-grade skincare or laser treatments.

If pigmentation is your biggest concern, we may recommend a different approach.

Am I Too Old for Microneedling?

Absolutely not. Microneedling can be beneficial at almost any age.

Whether you’re 40, 50, 60, or beyond, stimulating even a small amount of additional collagen and elastin is more beneficial than doing nothing at all. Healthy aging is about continuing to support your skin over time.

How Many Microneedling Treatments Do You Need?

If you’ve never had microneedling before, we typically recommend starting with a series of three treatments to really encourage collagen production.

After that, maintenance treatments every six months can help keep your results going.

Are Microneedling Results Permanent?

No, microneedling results are not permanent. Your skin continues to age, and collagen naturally continues to decline. Ongoing treatments help continue stimulating that repair process so you can maintain stronger, healthier-looking skin.

Microneedling with PRP, Exosomes, and PDO Afterglow

One way we can enhance microneedling results is by adding regenerative boosters.

At Skin Treats, we often pair:

  • Traditional microneedling with PRP or exosomes

  • RF microneedling with PDO Afterglow

These boosters are able to penetrate through the microchannels created during treatment and provide additional support for collagen and elastin stimulation.

The best option depends on your skin concerns and goals.

Which Microneedling Treatment Is Right for Me?

The truth is that almost everyone can benefit from some form of microneedling. The key is choosing the right treatment for your specific skin, goals, and stage of aging.

Whether that’s traditional microneedling, RF microneedling, laser treatments, or a combination approach, the best results come from creating a personalized plan.
